Everyone keeps calling Squad Zero a disappointment in Bleach Thousand Year Blood War and it is driving me up the wall. You watched Nimaiya drop three of the Schutzstaffel in one hit, saw Ichibei literally erase Yhwachs name from existence, and somehow walked away thinking the Zero Division got done dirty. The problem is not that they were weak. The problem is that Kubo wrote Yhwach to be completely busted and then had him bring four minions who can rewrite reality.
The manga rushed through their fights so fast you could blink and miss the entire Royal Guard getting wiped. That created this weird collective memory where people think they jobbed hard to some random Quincies. But if you look at what actually happened, both in the manga and especially in the anime, these five individuals are still the strongest Shinigami ever assembled. They just fought against a guy who can see every future and steal power from his own children.
The Manga Did Them Dirty With Off Screen Losses
Go back and read the original chapters. Nimaiya kills three elites instantly. Then Yhwach uses Auswahlen, revives them with god powers, and suddenly the rest of Squad Zero is off screen getting beaten while Ichibei monologues. That is it. That is the whole fight for Tenjiro, Senjumaru, and Kirio. They get zero panels of actual combat after the revival and then we see them laid out on the floor. Of course that looks like a nerf. You took characters hyped as stronger than the entire Gotei 13 and had them lose to cutaways.
The anime fixed this mess by showing the actual brawl. We see Tenjiro using his hot spring water offensively with Kinpika. We see Kirio regrowing the Cage of Life. We see Senjumaru actually fighting Uryu and Haschwalth instead of just standing there. The expanded fight scenes prove these were not one sided stomps until the Almighty came into play. The Schutzstaffel had to use their Vollstandig forms and Yhwach still had to juice them up with stolen soul energy to win.
The Seal Mechanic Changes Everything
Here is the part nobody talks about when they scale these characters. Only one member of Squad Zero can use their full power at any given time. The others keep their power sealed to protect the Soul King Palace. This is not headcanon. It is explained that they have to sacrifice themselves to break the seals for another member to go all out.
This means when Nimaiya was soloing the Elites, the others were fighting with one hand tied behind their backs. When Ichibei activated his Bankai against Yhwach, he was the one unsealed member. Everyone else was still restricted. You are not watching five people at full strength lose to Quincies. You are watching one unsealed fighter and four support characters holding back their literal dimension shaking reiatsu.
Ichibei Proved The Hype Was Real

Ichibei Hyosube is the only one who got to show off in both versions and he delivered. He muted Yhwach by taking his voice. He cut his arm in half by renaming it. He crushed him with a foot the size of a mountain after turning him into a black ant. The only reason Ichibei lost is because Yhwach has the Almighty, an ability that literally says no to death by picking a future where he survives.
Without that specific hax, Ichibei would have soloed the King of Quincies. People argue about Aizen vs Ichibei but the truth is Ichibei can rename you into a helpless bug. That is not a power level you beat with more reiatsu. You need reality warping to survive him and Yhwach only survived because he is basically a god.
Nimaiya and the One Shot Problem
Oetsu Nimaiya created the Zanpakuto. That is his qualification for Squad Zero. In the anime, he demonstrates why that matters by cutting down three Schutzstaffel members before they can blink. Lille Barro, the guy who later fights Shunsui to a standstill, gets dropped in one hit. Pernida gets sliced. Gerard gets wrecked. The only reason Nimaiya does not win the war right there is Askin surviving through pure luck and then Yhwach pressing the Auswahlen button.
Auswahlen is not a power scale thing. It is a story device that says Yhwach can redistribute power however he wants. He took power from his own army to revive his elites and give them new abilities. That is not Squad Zero being weak. That is the main villain using a cheat code.
Why Auswahlen Breaks Normal Scaling

You cannot power scale Auswahlen. It ignores durability, skill, and strategy. Yhwach points his hand and steals the power from whoever he wants. He used it to kill his own soldiers and give that energy to the Schutzstaffel. This means the Elites that beat Squad Zero were not the same Elites that Squad Zero was originally fighting. They were amped up by the soul energy of a thousand Quincies.
If you take that boost away, Nimaiya already proved he can kill them. Tenjiro and Senjumaru were holding their own against the base versions. The only reason the fight turned was the revival with new hax abilities like Gerads miracle powers and Lilles X Axis. Those are not things you beat with more sword swings. You beat them with specific counters or you lose.
The Captain Level Debate
There is this weird theory going around that Squad Zero members were just mid tier Captains before getting promoted. The idea is that Hikifune was not stronger than Yamamoto when she ran Squad 12, but got boosted by the Oken later. This is supposed to explain why they do not seem that much stronger than the Gotei 13 guys in some scenes.
That theory misses the point. Even if they were Captain level before, the Oken transformation makes their bodies different. They have reiatsu that shakes the three worlds when unsealed. That is not a small upgrade. That is a fundamental change in their existence. The reason they seem close to Captain level in some moments is because they are sealed. When they unseal, as seen with Ichibei, they are on another plane entirely.
The Anime Gave Them The Fights They Deserved
The additional scenes in the anime finally let Tenjiro and Kirio show their Bankai level abilities. Tenjiro is not just a healer. He can replace your blood with superheated spring water that heals you by killing your old cells. That is terrifying. Kirio can grow trees that absorb any attack and turn it into more growth. Senjumaru has puppet strings that can sew through dimensions.
These are not abilities that lose to conventional fighters. They lost to literal gods who can rewrite the future. Shunsui and the other Captains only survived their encounters with the Schutzstaffel because of specific counters and luck. Squad Zero held them off while sealed and only lost after the enemy got resurrected with superpowers.
Why People Think They Were Nerfed
The disappointment comes from expectations. Fans heard stronger than the Gotei 13 and imagined them soloing armies. Instead they got a tactical battle where the Royal Guard set traps, fought strategically, and still lost because the enemy had perfect future sight and immortality. That feels like a letdown but it is not bad writing. It is just a mismatch.
Yhwach did not beat them with strength. He beat them with precognition and soul theft. If you look at the actual feats, Senjumaru created a fake palace to trap the invaders. That is insane preparation. Ichibei almost killed the main villain solo. Nimaiya killed three endgame bosses in seconds. The only failure was getting overwhelmed by revived super soldiers with hax, which is exactly what happened to the Captains down in the Seireitei too.
The Power Scaling Is Consistent If You Pay Attention
Bleach has always had weird scaling. Aizen toyed with Captains but struggled with Ichigo who then struggled with Ulquiorra. It is messy. But Squad Zero fits where they should be. They are above Captain level but below Transcendent beings like Final Getsuga Tensho Ichigo or Hogyoku Aizen. Yhwach with the Almighty is a Transcendent being. His elites with Auswahlen amps are borderline Transcendent.
So when Squad Zero loses to them, it is not a nerf. It is just them hitting the ceiling of what Shinigami can do without becoming something else entirely. Ichibei touched that ceiling and almost won. The others fought while sealed against enemies who literally cannot die without specific counters. That is not disappointing. That is just the limits of their biology.

Squad Zero served their purpose. They slowed down Yhwach long enough for Ichigo to arrive. They killed the Schutzstaffel once forcing the Auswahlen which revealed Yhwachs true nature to his own army. They showcased what peak Shinigami abilities look like before the final boss fight. The anime made sure they looked good doing it, adding the Uryu vs Senjumaru fight and extending the brawl against the revived Elites to show it was not a stomp.
Stop calling them weak. They were fighting gods while holding back their own power to protect the palace. They did fine.
